ABOUT ME
My name is Billie Lee. I’m a vegan advocate, trans activist and television personality who began my own vegan journey over 10 years ago! As a trans activist, I have always been uncomfortable with labels and being put in a box of what society thinks I should be. The same thing goes for my food. Born and raised in a trailer park where McDonalds was considered a complete meal, veganism definitely was not part of my world.
For me, it started with my health, I just didn’t feel good. I had stomach problems and felt tired all the time. After numerous doctor consultations, I finally found a wonderful women in Pasadena California – Doctor Lilly. She used my blood to test for food and environmental allergies. I was shocked to find out I was allergic to pork and egg. I literally grew up on eggs and bacon or sausage! Dr Lilly recommended I try a strict plant based diet for 30 days to see how I felt without animal products. Of course, over the 30 day period there were times I panicked (I couldn’t have my sisters famous cheese dip!) but I stayed strong. As the 30 days approached I couldn’t stop smiling. I was literally glowing. I couldn’t get over how great I felt. My energy was through the roof and I felt strong but light. It was the coolest feeling. Nine years later and I can honestly tell you I wouldn’t change a thing. I will also tell you that I’ve had my fair share of secret encounters with dairy by slipping in a slice of cheese pizza or a dip in sour cream once in a while. We are not in a perfect world and we have to live life to the fullest. However every slice of pizza or dip of sour cream comes from a great deal of pain. Every time we choose plant based options we are literally saving lives. How powerful is that?
Like with any transition in life may it be career, gender or your nutrition, the transition into plant based living is not always easy but well worth it in the end. After realizing how awful the meat and dairy industry treats animals, I realized I could never go back to eating animals again. We must be gentle with ourselves through this process and lead with compassion. Let’s have fun making really good food that saves animals and the planet! I’m so excited to be on this journey with you. Please follow me on Instagram @ShesSoVegan, subscribe to my newsletter and YouTube channel for vegan recipes, stories, and recommendations!
